Set sail with a replica of the legendary Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' flagship. With the original, Columbus discovered America on his expedition in 1492 and also landed on the neighbouring island of Porto Santo to explore Madeira from there.

The "Santa Maria" was built in Madeira in the small fishing village of Câmara de Lobos by the Dutchman Robert Wijntje, who lives on the island, together with seven local craftsmen. This is how a dream came true. The construction work lasted one year (July 1997 - July 1998) and 320m3 of wood (mostly mahogany) was installed.

The Caravelle measures 22 metres in length and has been faithfully reproduced except for the engine. The three-master presented the Madeira wine at the EXPO 98 World Exhibition in Lisbon. Since then, it has also been located as a tourist attraction in the port of Funchal.

The "Santa Maria" runs out twice a day. Nearly 100 passengers can be accommodated here. Dressed as pirates, the crew serves Madeira wine and the popular honey cake (Bolo de Mel) and tells adventurous pirate stories. Especially children love trips with the Santa Maria, but also adults are amazed at the small boat Christoper Columbus has conquered the world's oceans with. There are also fantastic views of the south coast of Madeira. Dolphins are often spotted during the voyages and in the summer months you can swim and snorkel from the ship.

On 31 December, Santa Maria offers a special ride to experience Madeira's famous New Year's Eve fireworks from the sea. More information can be found here.
